 Types of Memberships

Upon discussion and approval by the Board, the General Manager shall facilitate such registration and partnerships into the national and international organization.

  • The Society may become a member of any national or international organization that may best serve the interests of the Society.
  • The Society may enter into partnerships with organizations, institutions and such other service providers approved by the Board of Directors.
  • The Society may form or participate in such subsidiaries as may be of benefit to its members.
  • The Society shall recognize the fact that such membership and partnerships are vital for the safety of its transactions and in the interest of its members.

 Rights of Members

Members shall enjoy the following rights:

  • Elect and be elected to the organs of the Society subject to the By-Laws.
  • Enjoy the use of all facilities and services of the Society subject to the By-Laws
  • Receive periodically and regularly or upon request and at least quarterly, a statement of account in respect of his/her transactions with the Society.
  • Access all legitimate information relating to the Society including; internal regulations, registers, minutes of general meetings, annual accounts, inventories and investigation reports at the registered office of the Society
  • Vote on all matters put before a general meeting of the Society.
  • All other rights prescribed by the Act/Rules.
  • Appointing a nominee.
  • Participating in the sharing of the Society’s surpluses.
  • Accessing all legitimate information relating to the Society, including internal regulations, registers, minutes of the General Meetings, Supervisory Committee reports, annual accounts and inventories, investigation reports, at the registered office of the Society, subject to the Society’s policies and regulations in force at the time.
  • Voting on all matters put before the electoral zone.
  • Enjoying all other rights as prescribed by the Co-operative Act and the Rules

 Co-operative Principles

In the conduct of its business, the Society shall be guided by the International Co-operative Principles. These Co-operative Principles are:-

  • Voluntary and open membership
  • Democratic member control
  • Economic participation by members
  • Autonomy and independence
  • Education, training, and information
  • Co-operation among co-operatives; and
  • Concern for community.

 Members Obligations

A member of the Society shall have the following obligation to:

  • Be faithful and honest in all their dealings with the Society.
  • Observe and comply with all the Society’s By-Laws and decisions taken by the organs of the Society in accordance with the By-Laws.
  • Buy and pay up for shares or make any other payments as provided for in the By-Laws.
  • Pay for the debts of the Society at the time of liquidation where the assets are insufficient to meet the liabilities.
  • Support projects of the Society approved by the relevant authority.

 Cessation of Membership

Membership to the Society will terminate when a member: 

  • Voluntary resignation by the member.
  • Death of the member.
  • Expulsion from membership.
  • Becoming certifiably insane.
  • Acting contrary to the relevant provisions of the Co-operative Act, the Sacco Act, Rules, Regulations and these By-laws.
  • Ceasing to hold the eligibility qualifications for membership stated in these By-laws.
  • Withdrawing all his deposits and transferring his shares.
  • Being declared bankrupt by a court of law.
